Austin's Best Neighborhood Tex-Mex

View as Map

In last week's Friday Open Thread, Eater asked readers to recommend their favorite neighborhood Tex-Mex. Not necessarily the much-visited, much-talked about destinations around town, but that place around the corner with the enchiladas you crave on the regular and the margaritas worth daydreaming about. Readers chimed with recommendations from Round Rock to Circle C, and both newly-opened restaurants and titans of fifty years were deemed worthy.

Don't see your favorite neighborhood spot on the list? Add it in the comments, or drop your recommendation down the tipline.

Editor emeritus Paula Forbes is a huge Amaya's fan. Dwarfed by budget hotels and Interstate 35, Amaya's Taco Village is the kind of Tex-Mex joint that time forgot, and it's perfect that way. Don't leave without an order of the Village tacos.

El Azteca has been in business for fifty years this year. Fifty! And they still serve up some extremely solid Tex-Mex and please cabrito fans all over the city.

This South Austin classic shares a strip mall with three trendy new Austin eateries: Lick, Henri's, and Barley Swine. Don't let those destinations dwarf some of the best Tex-Mex brunch in Austin.

Several readers argue that while Curra's is not purely "Tex-Mex," their Tex-Mex menu offerings are some of the best.

Casa Garcia's Mexican Restaurant

Does it get more Tex-Mex than Big Red 'Ritas? There are many Casa Garcia's in the greater Austin area, including locations in Kyle and one forthcoming in New Braunfels. Readers vote the William Cannon and Round Rock locations as their favorites; the Kyle outpost is solid, too.
