| Cat Cardenas/Eater Austin

The Eater Awards is that special time of the year when we at Eater and Eater Austin honor the very best restaurants, food trucks, bars, chefs, dining experiences, etc., etc. in our cities.

Eater Austin was launched in 2010, and the very first Eater Awards were held that year. The format morphed over the years, changing from its initial list of editor-selected nominees voted on by readers to the now solely editors’ choices. And — outside of a pause during the pandemic in 2020 — the Eater Awards have been held 13 times.

As a way of making it that much easier to honor the winners through the years, Eater Austin put together this handy map of every single awardee who has received that coveted tomato can trophy from us, including the newest 2024 class. For this map, we’re only including places that are still open (RIP).

Best Pandemic Pivot Turned Permanent Shop of 2021

Early in the pandemic, Southern restaurant Olamaie pivoted into the fast-causal lane as a biscuit takeout service when dine-in services weren’t safe in 2020. And then the team smartly turned that into a full-grown physical cafe in the Wells Branch neighborhood in July 2021. The menu makes ample use of those wonderful biscuits a la carte or as sweet or savory sandwiches. Takeout orders can be placed online or in person; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas.

Best New Restaurant of 2023

Chef Christopher Krinsky started the restaurant as a private garage dinner series while he tested out bowls of Mexican Japanese ramen to guests before opening a food court counter-service restaurant within Scofield Farms’s supermarket Hana World Market in February 2023. That’s where he and the team dish out wonderful fusion ramens and yakitori-based tacos. There are indoor dine-in services.

Best New Food Truck of 2022

It’s obvious why the North Burnet taco truck from chef Joseph Gomez won both a slot on Eater National’s best new restaurants list and Eater Austin’s Eater Awards in 2022: the tacos are damn good. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas.

There are indoor dine-in services.

Odd Duck

Restaurant of the Year of 2014

It’s clear that Bryce Gilmore has helped and continues to define what Austin cuisine is (see Barley Swine above), and this is another one of those stories. Odd Duck started out as a food truck which closed while Gilmore opened Barley Swine and then it came back as a physical restaurant. Expect a comparatively more casual approach to New Texan cuisine than Barley Swine, but still with the same focused attention with creating creative dishes. The menu at the South Lamar food truck is short but sweet: chef Lakana Trubiana showcases the best of the best dishes from her home country Thailand.
