The all-day menu features those biscuits as well as breakfast and lunch plates (think pancakes and crawfish mac and cheese), sandwiches, and drinks. Takeout orders can be placed online or in person; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

Pitmaster Mems Davila of former barbecue truck Wünder Pig opened this upper-scale smoked meats restaurant in Crestview in early November. Along with serving barbecue by the half-pound (brisket, sausages, ribs, etc.), the table-service spot also offers plated dishes centered on smoked meats such as crispy duck, pork chops, and burgers. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

The menu offers up Sichuan and Shanghainese dishes; of the former, expect dishes like spicy beef noodles; and the latter offers soup dumplings and buns. The team behind downtown seafood restaurant Bill’s Oyster got into the Southwestern cuisine game with this new casual restaurant in Rosedale in mid-November. Led by executive chef Rene Garza, there are tons of Indigenous-Mexican-Texan-American-tinged dishes, such as shaved prime rib with pepper jelly on a jalapeño-cheddar cheese bun; wild mushroom quesadillas, and duck confit flautas with mole amarillo. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

The eagerly-awaited Austin expansion of the popular South African global fast-casual chain restaurant finally opened in Mueller in mid-November. The star of the menu is its grilled chicken marinated in a spicy peri peri pepper sauce. There are whole chickens, wings, breasts, thighs, legs, and livers, along with sandwiches, wraps, salads, and much more. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

Micklethwait Craft Meats

Housed in a former church, this barbecue joint’s new standalone restaurant opened in early January, offering its signature smoked meats, including juicy brisket, Tex-Czech sausage, and massive Dino beef ribs. Round out your solo plate or family-style meal with sides like lemon poppy slaw, jalapeno cheese grits, and Country potato salad. The new space and additional pits have made room for new dishes, including the chicken al carbon. Smoked Southwest Texas-style with post-oak wood and finished directly over mesquite coals, this roasted chicken is devoured like build-your-own tacos with tortillas and a side of salsa verde. Don’t leave without trying some of Micklethwait’s baked goods, which are made in-house. It’s open from 11 a.m. to roughly 4 p.m. or sellout. There is indoor and outdoor seating.

On deck are wood-fired pies, hoagies with meatballs or fried green tomatoes, and other Italian Americanish dishes. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

The teams behind Jack Allen’s Kitchen and Salt Traders Coastal Cooking turned their attention to all-things brunch with this new restaurant in Zilker in late November. The daytime cafe is full of Texan and American a.m. comfort food. dishes with loads of eggs, bready goods (churro pancakes, bacon-chive waffles), burgers, and salads. One of Mexico City’s essential taquerias expanded into the U.S. for the first time and decided to open in Central East Austin in early September. The restaurant is all about coastal Mexican dishes and seafood, including tacos made with shrimp longanisa and pork rinds; burritos stuffed with smoked swordfish and octopus; and Tostitos served with Sinaloan-styled ceviche. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

There are the classics, including a kinilaw bar full of Filipino acid-cured fish salads, skewered meats, lechon, and more. And yes, this is the former Ah Sing Den bar space. The notable Austin farmers market stand-coffee roaster-nixtamalization operation opened its first physical cafe in Holly in early July and already it won an Eater Award. It’s all about making use of its star ingredients for its food and coffee drinks. Find great bites like masa Twinkies, masa biscuits, and masa pancakes, alongside thoughtful coffee, espresso, and masa-based drinks. There are outdoor dine-in areas.

Austin’s bakery scene is a better place now that chef Amanda Rockman finally opened her own spot in mid-October in the Holly neighborhood. There are so many wonderful croissants, both sweet (apple-almond, chocolate fudge) and savory (ham-cheese-mustard, everything bagel), alongside rip-and-dip bagels and schmears and other pastries.
